Welcome 2 Dumfries & Galloway!
hotels, restaurants, businesses, guest houses, events, services, festivals, gardens and more.

mountain biking in dumfries and galloway.Mountain Biking is truly a growth area of outdoor recreation. A great way to keep fit and have fun without breaking the bank - unless you really want to spend £1,000 on a custom-built mountain bike? Hire one instead! Whatever level of expense your bike is, there is bound to be a route for your here. (We invented the Bicycle you know, back in 1840. A chap named Kirkpatrick McMillan knocked one together.).

The National Cycle Network has about 180 miles of route here in Dumfries & Galloway. There is an additonal 217 miles of The National Byway too. Should keep you going for a while!

Galloway Forest Park has miles of cycleways, paths and bridleways to explore, either on foot, bike or hoof, and is well worth an extensive visit, if in the region.

Look out for the Walkers Welcome logo and the Cyclists Welcome logo wherever you go. These are accommodation providers that particularly welcome....walkers & cyclists. They will usually have a secure area for your bike, drying facility (handy for muddy clothes and boots), local knowledge, a good breakfast and a hearty welcome.

Cyclists welcome.Walker's welcome.

The 7 Stanes Routes offer an exhilarating ride and are fast gaining in popularity. Check them out at Glentrool, Kiroughtree, Ae, Mabie, Dalbeattie, Tweed and Newcastleton. Although some of the routes are aimed at experienced bikers, there are routes suitable for novices, families, advanced...whatever your level of skill, there will be a route for you. And don't forget! we have some good walking country here too. Cliff top walks, forest walks, hill walks, mountain walks...you get the idea! Wherever you stay, ask your hosts about local walks of interest, local paths, local Rambler's groups. Local newspapers are a good source of information about the hill walking scene locally, and provide information about where and when to meet, route difficulty etc.

Please remember, especially in winter, that weather conditions in the hills can change very quickly. Exercise judgement and wear appropriate clothing - even in summer. The boys'n'girls of Mountain Rescue will not be too pleased (to put it mildly) if they have to carry you off the hill because you were wearing t-shirt, shorts and flip-flops when you went down with exposure. If in doubt, check local knowledge. Again, Tourist Information points will have details about Ranger led walks, why not try one as an introduction to our scenery? (And we have some of the best Rangers in Britain here too.)

The Forestry Commission have opened up a lot of their vast forest domains locally to the outdoorsman and woman. At Glen Trool Forest there is 58km of tracks to explore!
